Sustainable Table: Features: Winter Solstice

Winter Solstice
Also called Yule and Saturnalia
Many cultures, especially those from Northern latitudes, hold celebrations during the winter solstice. This is the shortest day of the year when the sun is at its lowest point. In pagan Scandinavia, people celebrated the Yule, where the traditions included the Yule log, mistletoe, singing and dancing. Ancient Romans celebrated Saturnalia, which involved many festivities. Schools were closed; the army rested; no executions were performed. People exchanged small gifts. A number of these customs were later incorporated into Christmas celebrations.
